Seawatch measurement buoys (SW04) — multi-sensor oceanographic buoy

The Seawatch Buoy (Fugro GEOS) is a multi-sensor, directional measurement buoy for continuous sea monitoring: it measures wave height and direction, surface current speed and direction, meteorological parameters, water temperature and salinity, and optionally also dissolved oxygen, hydrocarbons, gamma radiation and chlorophyll-a (algae detection). Full onboard data processing, real-time presentation and two-way communication (satellite, GSM, radio) for data transmission and remote control. A modular construction eases transport and assembly, and vertical stabilization ensures low buoy motion.

Full on-board data processing, real-time presentation and two-way communication (satellite, GSM, radio) for data transmission and remote control. The modular design facilitates transport and assembly, and vertical stabilisation ensures low buoy motion.

Note: The buoy is a sensor carrier with a flexible configuration — the set of sensors and communication is selected to suit the project's needs. Proven in operation since 1985.

Key features

  • Directional wave measurement (height, direction, period) based on spectral analysis.
  • Surface current: speed 0–600 cm/s (±1 cm/s or 2%), direction 0–360° (±2.5°).
  • Meteo: wind 0–60 m/s, direction, pressure 800–1100 hPa, air temperature −30…+75 °C.
  • Sea temperature −5…+32 °C (±0.03 °C) and conductivity/salinity.
  • Optional sensors: CTD, dissolved oxygen, gamma radiation, hydrocarbons, chlorophyll-a.
  • Full on-board data processing; real-time presentation.
  • Two-way communication: Inmarsat-C, ORBCOMM, ARGOS, GSM, UHF/VHF radio; GPS position.
  • 60 W solar power + 216 Ah batteries (770 Ah lithium option); modular hull.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

What does the Seawatch buoy measure?

Waves (height/direction/period), surface currents, wind, air pressure and temperature, water temperature and salinity, and optionally oxygen, hydrocarbons, gamma radiation and chlorophyll-a.

How does it transmit data?

Two-way — via satellite (Inmarsat-C, ORBCOMM), GSM or UHF/VHF radio; data is presented in real time, and remote control is also possible.

Is the sensor configuration flexible?

Yes — the buoy is a carrier for sensors selected to suit the project; proven in operation since 1985.
