The Dräger X-pid 9000/9500 is a portable, selective detector of volatile organic compounds that combines gas chromatography (pre-separation) with photoionization detection (PID 10.6 eV). This allows it to measure specific compounds — primarily carcinogenic benzene and 1,3-butadiene — eliminating interference from other hydrocarbons. The 9500 version quantifies about 40 compounds (including benzene, butadiene, toluene, xylenes, vinyl chloride, ethylene oxide), and the 9500+ detects benzene from as low as 5 ppb. It operates without consumables (no tubes), and is controlled via an intrinsically safe smartphone with a dedicated app.
