MSA Observer i — ultrasonic gas leak detector

The MSA Observer i is an omnidirectional acoustic detector for pressurized gas leaks, using Gassonic ultrasonic technology. It detects leaks instantly — even where classic gas-concentration detection is ineffective or dependent on ventilation. A detection range of up to 28 m reduces the number of sensors needed. An artificial neural network (ANN) distinguishes a real leak from background noise, eliminating false alarms. SafeTech selects, installs and services ultrasonic detection systems.

Key features

  • Omnidirectional acoustic detection (Gassonic technology) — detects a leak regardless of wind direction and gas dispersion.
  • Artificial neural network (ANN) distinguishes leak sound from background noise — fewer false alarms.
  • No field training required — fully ready for operation right after installation.
  • Detects leaks starting from 2 bar pressure — fast response to small leaks.
  • Patented Senssonic self-test function — full fail-safe operation.
  • Maintenance-free calibration and test — performed by a single person.
  • Detection range up to 28 m — fewer sensors needed on the same installation.

Applications

Compressor stations, pressurized installations, pipelines and industrial nodes in open areas where ventilation or wind direction hinder classic gas-concentration detection.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How does an ultrasonic detector work?

It listens for the characteristic sound (ultrasound) generated by gas escaping under pressure — it reacts to the fact of the leak itself, not its dispersed concentration in the air, so it responds instantly and independently of wind.

Does it require calibration with a reference gas like a standard detector?

Not in that sense — the self-test and function check (Senssonic) is performed by a single person without calibration gas, which greatly simplifies servicing.

Does SafeTech design such systems?

Yes — we select sensor placement, install and service ultrasonic detection systems in industrial installations throughout Poland.
